Environmental Aspects

Five hundred thousand football matches are played in Sweden alone every year, and a large proporition of these games are reported in the traditional way - via forms, letters, postage and transportation.

Each team will receive a copy of the match report, the referee and the Swedish Football Association also receive a copy or the original of the match report.  This results in the generation of ca 2.5 million documents every year or 15,000 kg of paper.

To manufacture 1000 kg of paper, approximately 1800 kg of wood, 50 kg of chemicals, and clean water are required.  The manufacture of pulp requires a lot of energy obtained from the combustion of bark, oil, or electricity, resulting in emissions of sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and nitrogen compounds.

For the production of Swedish football information management documents, 20 tons of wood and 700 kg of chemicals are needed.  Added to that is the energy required to manufacture the paper, its transport, warehousing, air pollution, etc (Source: Mid Sweden University).

With Spintso football, it is possible to drastically reduce these emissions and improve the environment.  Our vision is to reduce report handling by at least 50% within 3-5 years.

It is four times better for the environment to use Spintso compared to traditional report management based on the calculation that 50% of all match reports are produced on recycled paper (see life cycle analysis below).

The calculation is also based on the amount of document handling within Swedish football.  However match reporting is carried out in a similar way for all refereed sports in Europe and the world.  If this is taken into account, and considering that there are 52 football associations around the world, the environmental impact of using Spintso will be even greater.
